1929 - "The King Sideways in India": KGV. 1½a. rose-carmine, watermark Multiple Star SIDEWAYS, used and cancelled by Bombay 1932 double-ring cds, two short perfs at right otherwise fine. THE ONLY KNOWN BRITISH INDIAN DEFINITIVE WITH WATERMARK SIDEWAYS. AN ACTUALLY UNIQUE STAMP, AND A MAJOR RARITY OF BRITISH INDIAN PHILATELY. R.P.S. certificate (1990).
>> This stamp has been discovered and described by Max Smith (Indian Post No. 105, p. 106, 1990). Although the R.P.S. certificate stated 'There is a block of four in the Royal Collection' further investigations show that there is NO further stamp or a block of four in the Royal Collection, which has been confirmed by Mr Sedi and colleagues. For that, it is a unique item and the only British Indian definitive showing the watermark sideways. As the similar unique KGV. stamp of Australia (1914 1d. carmine-red with Wmk sideways, SG 21cz: £50,000) it has to be regarded as a fluke. There are several theories how such stamps have been produced, 1) by printing on a folded corner of the watermarked printing sheet (if so, the fold must be 45 degrees exactly, and the stamp would have been printed on the gummed side!?) or 2) by printing on a repaired hole of the printing leave by using another piece (of the watermarked paper) turned 90 degrees to cover the hole, or by something else? The investigations have to be continued. <<
