1842 First Afghan War S&S letter: Soldier's entire, countersigned by the Commanding officer, written by H. Fox, Sergeant HM's 9th Foot, from Camp Peshawar (24 Mar.) to London (19 Sep.) via Calcutta = 171 days, with a superb strike of circled "SOLDIERS & SEAMANS LETTER/BY SHIP/4" h/s on front, and on reverse with despatch and arrival datestamps in red. 8Bearing postage: Being double the unpaid '1d' privilege rate + 2d ship Captain's gratuity = 4d.) The First Afghan War (1839-42) letter written from Camp Peshawar en route to Afghanistan to relieve the besieged garrison at Jellalabad and Kadarhar, and to obtain retribution for the earlier slaughter of British troops. (Full text of the letter is enclosed.)
