En mars 1905, alors que le tourisme et l’automobile prennent leur essor, les longues plages du littoral aquitain sont baptisés « Côte d’Argent » par le journaliste bordelais Maurice Martin. Accompagné d’amis fervents de découvertes pittoresques, il a organisé une caravane d’Arcachon à Biarritz, à travers lettes et pinhadars, à cheval ou sur des bros tirés par des mules, qui mène représentants de la presse et notabilités locales le long de cette sauvage côte du Golfe de Gascogne.
