Westland Helicopters and their developments
A fascinating 54-pages, full-colour, 1955 promotional brochure from Britain's leading helicopter manufacturer about their models in production and those on the drawing board.
A comprehensive description of the Westland S-51 and S-55, two models built under Sikordky licence in those days. Their various equipment and power plants - the Alvis "Leonides" and the Pratt & Whitney "Wasp" engines - are reviewed.
The brochure then describes three amazing heavy helicopter projects (that remained on the drawing board): the W.80, the W.85 and the W.90. The W.80 was a twin-engine single-rotor helicopter designed to carry 36 passengers for inner-city and feeder airline work. The W.85 was more ambitious: it featured a torqueless rotor, driven by propulsive jet thrust at the tips. It was a hundred-seat military helicopter project, driven by six Armstrong Siddeley "Adder" gas turbines, two on each rotor blade tip. Finally, the giant W.90 helicopter was designed to transport half a battalion at a time: with a maximum take off weight of 233,000 lbs, it could carry 54 tons of cargo or 450 troops. It was powered by a "Sapphire" jet engine on each tip of the three (200 ft diameter) rotor blades.
While Westland's design office dreams of the fifties remained on the drawing board, the Soviet helicopter bureau Mil was thinking about almost similar peformance to exploit Siberia's natural resources. And they succeeded in building them. But that was another story ...

Une fascinante brochure promotionnelle de 54 pages, en couleur, datant de 1955, du premier fabricant britannique d'hélicoptères, sur ses modèles en production et ceux en cours de conception.
Une description complète des Westland S-51 et S-55, deux modèles construits à l'époque sous licence Sikordky. Leurs différents équipements et moteurs - les moteurs Alvis "Leonides" et Pratt & Whitney "Wasp" - sont passés en revue.
La brochure décrit ensuite trois étonnants projets d'hélicoptères lourds (restés sur la planche à dessin) : le W.80, le W.85 et le W.90. Le W.80 était un hélicoptère bimoteur mono-rotor conçu pour transporter 36 passagers dans les centres-villes et les lignes aériennes d'apport. Le W.85 était plus ambitieux : il était doté d'un rotor sans couple, entraîné par la poussée d'un jet propulsif à ses extrémités. Il s'agissait d'un projet d'hélicoptère militaire de cent places, propulsé par six turbines à gaz Armstrong Siddeley "Adder", deux sur chaque extrémité de pale de rotor. Enfin, l'hélicoptère géant W.90 était conçu pour transporter un demi-bataillon à la fois : avec une masse maximale au décollage de 233 000 livres, il pouvait transporter 54 tonnes de marchandises ou 450 soldats. Il était propulsé par un moteur à réaction "Saphir" situé à chaque extrémité des trois pales du rotor (200 pieds de diamètre).
Alors que les rêves du bureau d'études Westland des années 50 restaient sur la planche à dessin, le bureau soviétique des hélicoptères Mil réfléchissait à des performances presque similaires pour exploiter les ressources naturelles de la Sibérie. Et il réussit à les construire. Mais ça, c'est une autre histoire...
