250 Years of Copper Ticket Special Cover
The Story of India's First Metallic Postage Stamp (A Thread) It was in Jan 1774 India's 1st Gov. Gen., Warren Hastings began to make arrangements for the establishment of India's first Post Office Department. A Post Master General was appointed who took forward the plan ahead.
Celebrate a historic milestone in global communication with the 2024 Patna 250 Years of Copper Ticket Special Cover. Issued on 31st March 1774, the Copper Ticket marked a revolutionary moment as the inaugural “PREPAID TOKEN” for mail conveyance. This significant event occurred in Azimabad, now Patna, Bihar’s capital. Serving as a precursor to the paper postage stamp, it signaled a transformative era in postal services worldwide.
Under the governance of Mr. Warren Hastings, Governor General of India, the East India Bengal Presidency issued these Copper Tickets. Mr. Thomas Evans held the role of Postmaster General at the Presidency, while Mr. Charles Graeme served as Deputy Postmaster General in Patna. The 2 Anna ticket, with a diameter of 26.4 millimeters and weighing 8.95 grams, displayed ‘Patna Post Two Anna’ on the obverse and ‘Azimabad Dak Do Ani’ in Persian on the reverse. Additionally referred to as ‘Azimabad Ekanni’ and ‘Azimabad Duanni’, these tickets played a pivotal role in shaping postal history.
The release of the Copper Ticket on 31st March 1774, marked the formalization of a regular postal system, accompanied by the appointment of a Post Master General and the introduction of pre-payment of postage. Postage was levied at 2 Annas for every 160 kilometers (100 miles).
