In 1947 besloot de leiding van het in oprichting zijnde zelfstandig krijgsmachtdeel Koninklijke Luchtmacht een steunfonds op te richten voor collega’s in financiële nood:
Het Van Weerden Poelmanfonds. Het startkapitaal bedroeg destijds ƒ 100,00.
Het Fonds maakt geen deel uit van de formele organisatiestructuur van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht. Maar indien noodzakelijk kunnen alle (ex-) medewerkers hiervan gebruik maken.
De Stichting is vernoemd naar Hendrik van Weerden Poelman, een Militaire Luchtvaartpionier (1890-1945) die vooral ook bekend is vanwege zijn sociale betrokkenheid bij het personeel van de toenmalige Luchtvaartafdeeling en later het Wapen der Militaire Luchtvaart.

In 1947, the leadership of the Royal Netherlands Air Force, which was being established as an independent armed force, decided to set up a support fund for colleagues in financial need: The Van Weerden Poelman Fund. The starting capital at the time was NLG 100.00.
The Fund is not part of the formal organizational structure of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. But if necessary, all (former) employees can use this.
The Foundation is named after Hendrik van Weerden Poelman, a Military Aviation Pioneer (1890-1945) who is best known for his social involvement with the personnel of the then Aviation Department and later the Weapon of Military Aviation.
