Launched in September of 1931, the Akron was a technical marvel and more importantly, it was a truly American ship. Unlike the LZ 126 USS Los Angeles, which was built in Germany and then sold to the U.S., this was an American endeavor and was viewed with much pride by those who had built and designed her.
Airship U.S.S. Akron airmail cover with postmark "LAKEHURST NJ" May 6 1932, to Hartford CT, cachet reads "U.S.S. AKRON Coast to Coast trip carrying mail / United States Post Office Department", San Diego CA backstamp and additional cachet on reverse
