1973 Famous Chinese Stamp -Lin Zexu. Formosa(Taiwan), Rep of China.
Sc#1834.

Lin Zexu(1785-1850), a famous statesman, was a high official in the government of the Ching dynasty.

He was recognized as an early pioneer in prohibiting the use of opium in China. During his term as Viceroy of Hunan and Kwangtung provinces, he successfully suppressed the selling and supplying of opium to opium-addicts.

Because he destroyed by burning a huge quantity of opium at Humen, Kwangtung province on June 3, 1839, that day is now observed every year as Opium Suppression Day in China.
