Great Bitter Lake Association is a fascinating story of 14 ship, trapped between troops of Egypt and Israel on the Great Bitter Lake in Suez Canal from 1967 to 1975. Even more fascinating is the fact the sailors produced stamps and used them on circulated covers and souvenirs.

Great Bitter Lake Facebook group shows no activity any more, Wikipedia data on GBLA are far from being reliable, so let me offer some information. More can be found at ASFE SLOVAKIA www site.

Two books focus on GBLA stamps. Postage Stamps of the Great Bitter Lake Association by Bryan Hill from 1975 and Great Bitter Lake Association Stamp Catalogue, in colour, by ASFE Slovakia from 2020, updated and re-edited as GBLA Encyclopaedia & Stamp Catalogue in 2021.

GBLA collectors should remember five names. Captain Bryan Hill wrote the first book on GBLA. Captain Jiri Kudrna produced the first eighty GBLA stamps plus stationery. Robert Hornby proved GBLA stamps could be used as postage stamps. Marian Kasprzyk carved lino templates to print stamps and decorate covers, letters and souvenirs with wonderful pictures. Captain Klement Benda spent five tours of duty on the GBL, more than any other master, from 1968 to 1974 and formed the largest GBLA stamp collection. Naturally, each of them produced GBLA stamps.

Captain Bryan Hill, Master of the Agapenor and Melampus (Agalampus) in 1968, wrote the book for his fellow GBLA members. Readers find there many background stories that led to issuing stamps. Stamps were printed in many different ways, described in the book. The book is an excellent supplement to the GBLA Encyclopaedia. If shipped together, you pay only one 2 kg postage. The book is also an excellent protection for delivering stamps. Consult me about multiple purchases.
