These were difficult times for the coffers of the Nueva Plaza de Toros society in Madrid. The spring and autumn season tickets had disappeared and shows were scheduled at Las Ventas on Thursdays and Sundays. Livinio Stuyck Candela, at the time a practicing lawyer, represented a group of Catalan shareholders on the board of directors of the company that operated the plaza. Don José Alonso Orduña, its manager in 1946, left his position due to retirement. It is then that Mr. Honorio Riesgo proposes Livinio to take charge of management. He refuses in principle, but at the insistence of the board members, and given the more than delicate situation of the company, he temporarily assumes management, but not before making as a condition the granting of a bank loan in order to give the season. This credit is granted by the Mercantil e Industrial Bank, of which Mr. Honorio Riesgo was a part. Livinio thus assumed the management of Nueva Plaza de Toros de Madrid, S.A., in June 1946, an interim position that he would not abandon until his retirement in December 1969.
Livinio was not a typical bullfighter, and even at that time he could not be considered an amateur, but his business experience in other fields and its subsequent application to bullfighting management were very useful to him.
He is always remembered on these dates for having been the creator of the San Isidro Fair, which from its beginnings became the most important bullfighting event in the world. In 1950, and with the invaluable support of the then mayor of Madrid, Mr. José María Moreno Torres, La Venta del Batán was built on the land of the Casa de Campo, a showcase for the cattle that were fought. Livinio is also responsible for the institutionalization of Palm Sunday as the date of celebration of the first bullfight of the season and the celebration of bullfights on Sundays in July, August and September.
