You are buying a book about theater and art ...actually 5 artists that do theater costumes scenography etc The artist are Leger Pignon Gischia Coutaud Labisse there are lots of Typographies colored wonderful... but most important is there are 2 original Serigraphs in the covers by Gischia done at l'imprimierie Union in 1956 He is a non-figurative painter of the New School of Paris who created many sets and costumes for Jean Vilar's National Popular Theater. He is the son of an engineer father of Piedmontese origin and a mother from the ancient Landes population. He completed his secondary studies in Dax, in 1920 in Bordeaux, studying History, Art and Archaeology, and then in Paris preparing for the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, the École Normale Supérieure. He went to the Bayonne museum and his archaeological uncle introduced him to Romanesque painting, in particular the frescoes of the abbey of Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe. Léon Gischia, who has been drawing since the age of ten, decided in 1921 to devote himself to painting and enrolled at the Modern Academy (where Emile Othon Friesz teaches). After a few months of military service in the aviation, he found himself reformed and made his first trips to Italy and Spain. He then became passionate about pictorial theories. From 1927 to 1930 he stayed, producing advertising cartoons, in the United States, where he met Ernest Hemingway and befriended Alexander Calder. Returning to France, Gischia met Fernand Léger with whom he taught for a time at the Modern Academy and André Beaudin, who hired him to resume painting. In 1937, he participated in the Salon des Jeunes Artistes (especially with Jean Bertholle and Jean Le Moal) and, with Fernand Léger, in the decoration of Le Corbusier's Pavillon des Temps nouvelles at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. He presented his first personal exhibition at the Jeanne Bucher gallery in 1938 and participated in 1941, together with Bertholle, Le Moal, Alfred Manessier, Gustave Singier in the exhibition "Twenty young painters of French tradition" organized by Jean Bazaine, the first manifestation of painting avant-garde art under occupation, while condemnation of "degenerate art" grows. Gischia met Maurice Estève and Edouard Pignon with whom he exhibited at the Galerie de France in 1943 and who, with Zoran Mu?ič, became friends.
