Scritto nell'arco di sessant'anni, iI "Faust" rappresenta uno dei punti più alti della letteratura mondiale di ogni tempo. Ispirata dalla figura storica di un alchimista tedesco vissuto nel XVI secolo, la vicenda è incentrata sullo scellerato patto che un uomo sapientissimo, Faust, stipula con un rappresentante del Diavolo, Mefistofele, al fine di poter accedere ai segreti più arcani del mondo. In vita Mefistofele servirà Faust con le sue arti magiche, per poi ottenerne in punto di morte l'anima e consegnarla alla dannazione eterna. Diverse sono le scene rese immortali dalla penna di Goethe: la seduzione attraverso mille espedienti di Margherita, il sabba delle streghe nella notte di Valpurga, l'Imperatore tedesco alle prese con l'inflazione, la disperata difesa della propria casa di Filemone e Bauci... Nonostante i mille misfatti e l'accordo sottoscritto con il Maligno, nel momento finale Faust verrà salvato grazie alla forza creatrice che muove l'universo: il principio femminile dell'Amore.
